THE BATTER-UP ACADEMY

The BATTER-UP Academy fuses baseball with an in-school mentoring program, creating a cutting-edge model for improving youth outcomes while revitalizing America's pastime in the inner-city schools of our nation's capitol. The BATTER-UP Academy will begin its second season in the fall of 2007 for the 2007-2008 school year.

Each school participates in the BATTER-UP mentoring program. BATTER-UP provides mentor/coaches for each school; these mentor coaches are men who have expertise in baseball but also want to work with at-risk youth in the community to help improve youth outcomes. The mentor/coaches visit each school during lunch to conduct group mentoring sessions. In addition, the mentor/coaches visit each school after school to assist the baseball team with practice. By developing relationships on the baseball field and in the personal lives of the students, mentor/coaches can provide the guidance and role models that young men need to thrive.

In 2007-2008, BATTER-UP worked with 12 schools in Southeast, Southwest, and Northeast Washington, D.C.,
Including: 4 public charter schools and 8 public schools.

2008-2009 Participating Schools:

Elementary Schools: Moten Elementary, Green Elementary, Simon Elementay

Middle Schools: SEED PCS, DC Prep PCS, Blow Pierce PCS, Jefferson Middle School, Hart Middle School, Sousa Middle School

High Schools: Ballau High School, Anacostia High School, Friendship Collegiate.
