RBI - REVIVING BASEBALL IN INNER CITIES
BATTER-UP/RBI operates a number of different programs including: D.C. school programs, D.C. Independent Baseball League, D.C. RBI Summer Leagues, 5 youth travel teams, 2 regional All-Star teams, summer camps, free year-round clinics, the Beltway Blue Caps (a college wood bat team), a summer youth employment and college prep program, and coach development.
The D.C. RBI Summer League gives the top players from all over the D.C. Metro area the opportunity to compete against one another. The league is comprised of a 16U and 19U/Precollege division. The goal of the league is to provide players a growth path to college, exposing players to college recruiters while introducing them to high-level baseball that will prepare them to play at the next level. Teams from Montgomery, PG, Arundel, and St. Mary's Counties, Virginia, and D.C. compete in the league. The D.C. RBI League is proud to be the only competitive summer baseball league based in the city, boasting the most competitive baseball in the area while also showcasing the most racially and geographically diverse teams of any league in the region.
The goals of the D.C. RBI League are as follows:
- To offer the area's top players and teams exposure to college recruiters and professional scouts while playing competitive baseball.
- To refocus competitive baseball around the geographic area of Washington, D.C.
- To increase the geographic, socio-economic, and ethnic diversity of competitive baseball players and teams playing against one another.
- To generate a roster for the Major League Baseball-sponsored RBI All-Star teams.
The league, with a 19U and 16U division, offers teams the chance to compete against the best teams from around the D.C. area, including Virginia, Montgomery County, PG County, and Innercity D.C. Teams have the opportunity to help build up the D.C. RBI League, which we believe will be the premiere baseball league for aspiring college players, while giving their players exposure to college recruiters and professional scouts.
Each year Major League Baseball sponsors a national RBI tournament. The D.C. RBI All-Star teams that are selected to compete in this tournament will be compiled from players competing in the summer league. The D.C. RBI League gives players a chance to win a spot on these prestigious teams, which compete in regional and national competition against some of the top competition in the country.
Premier Recruiting Pipeline
We have a large and strong network of college coaches and professional scouts who support our league and will be attending regular season games and our post-season showcase and tournament. Keith Stubbs, director of BATTER-UP, is an area scout for the Phillies, and Jonas Singer, deputy director of BATTER-UP, is assistant baseball coach at Catholic University. We offer players and teams exposure to college programs and professional scouts throughout the area. Through participation in our program, teams and players can increase their future playing opportunities and improve their value as college baseball players.
Personalized Evaluation and Assessment Tools
The D.C. RBI League also offers, at no cost, personal evaluations and scouting breakdowns of each player in the league, which the players and coaches can then use for recruiting or simply improving future development. This is a great resource for players and coaches in the league as a way of improving their credibility amongst college coaches and improving their standing with their favorite schools. Importantly, this is also a valuable resource for all college coaches who are recruiting, which means that coaches will pay more attention and become more familiar with the players in our league than they would with players in other leagues.
Right Balance of Competition and Showcase
Many players now spend their summers playing for showcase teams, which tend to offer less competitive baseball oriented more towards exposing players to recruiters than to improving players skills and game-readiness. The goal of the D.C. RBI League is to increase the level of exposure for players while maintaining a high-level of competitive baseball. We aim to do this by inviting local recruiters and scouts to our regular season games. Our Memorial Day Tournament will increase the level of exposure by offering scouts and recruiters the opportunity to view players' skills while also observing their in-game play in serious competition.
